2010 Course Handbook
SOC182: Economy and Society
This introductory unit offers students insights into the workings of the economy from a sociological perspective. The unit considers a range of approaches to understanding the economy and considers how both the economy and society help to shape each other and our lives. We consider a number of contemporary issues including inequality, economic instability, environmental sustainability and consumerism. The unit also addresses the role of key institutions such as the market, the state, the corporation and the family. The unit aims to equip students with the tools needed to understand the role of the economy in society and to engage in contemporary debates about our economy.
