Manga and Japanese Contemporary Culture - JPS124
It is widely acknowledged that manga and anime hold a significant place in contemporary Japanese culture and beyond. This unit provides an insight into the unique visual and linguistic narratives of manga and anime (such as symbolism; conventions; and the specific features and issues of manga/anime creation and circulation). A number of representative works are examined from socio-cultural, psychological, philosophical and literary perspectives. In addition, as the first manga/anime unit, this unit incorporates basic skills training for research and essay writing. This unit is conducted in English and is open to students of any Faculty interested in Japan.
