Indigenous-Settler Relations from 1750 - MHIS201
This unit explores the interactions between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians from the 1750s to the present. It provides students with background in the nineteenth century context before moving through some of the key developments of the twentieth century. Included here is empire, environment and race; land; political resistance; the impact of Christianity and the missions; the role of the law; protection; assimilation; labour and sexual relations; anthropology; ideology; self-determination; rights; and sovereignty. The unit encourages students to consider history the way Aboriginal people have written, danced, performed, painted and understood it. We consider the legacies of colonialism in the present, including questions of restitution, to emphasise the complex connections and disconnections of a shared history. The unit provides scope for comparative reflection/s.
