ACES886: Contemporary Issues in Mathematics Education

Recent and proposed reform in mathematics teaching, curricula and assessment practices at the state and national levels is demanding broader professional knowledge and skills. New directions in research and curricula have focused particularly on the integration of mathematical proficiencies and problem solving. This unit provides students with the opportunity to examine current research and new pedagogies in the teaching and learning of mathematics from early childhood to adulthood. Current critical issues such as the role of new technologies in mathematics learning and teaching, and the impact of national and system-wide initiatives in mathematics education will be examined. Participants will have the opportunity to focus on an issue or specialised topic relevant to their professional practice.
